Mama duck

Phew.  I felt like a mama duck sitting on a nest with these sunflowers.  I planted them well before my due date, months ago at this point, to give me something else to focus on.  They needed tending, watering, and protecting (in the form of fencing made out of dowel rods and fishing line) from the herd of deer that lives in our yard.  I choose my battles with the deer so as to not go crazy from constant defeat, and these sunflowers were all I cared about them not eating this summer.  They nibbled a few, but I salvaged most.  They’ve turned into stunners and are already bumping against our gutters – really tall!  This guy finally decided to bloom overnight:

Curiously, almost all of the stalks have multiple buds/blooms on them.  I’m used to growing sunflowers with just one huge sunny bloom each, but multiple medium sized blooms are awfully nice, too!  I hope they don’t get top heavy…
